Anambra is home to some of the most biggest and popular markets in Anambra and Nigeria. These markets have continued to draw in visitors from all parts of Nigeria and outside the country. It has also contributed immensely to the growth and development of the economy of Anambra, through the huge tax the government generates from it.

Anambra is a state found in south eastern Nigeria.

It is bordered by Kogi to the north, Delta to the west, Rivers and Imo state to the south and Enugu to the east.

The capital city of Anambra is Awka.

It was created on the 27th august 1991.

Anambra has a population of over 4 million people and a land area of 4,416sqkm

The state is typically warm; it enjoys an average temperature of 30c and an annual rainfall 152-201 cm, hence agriculture is widely practiced here.

                                Quick History Of Anambra State

The present Anambra came into existence on the 27th of August 1991. It was created by former head of state Ibrahim Babangida together with nine other states namely: Taraba, Delta, Edo, Enugu, Jigawa, Kogi, Osun, Kebbi and Taraba states.

The name Anambra was gotten from a river in Anambra known as the Oma Mbala (Anambra River). This river is a tributary for the river Niger. It is a significant river in Anambra as it provides a source of water to the river Niger. It is 210km in length and its basin measures 7,125km.

The people of Anambra are known to be friendly and welcoming. It is for this reason many people from within and outside the country has chosen this city as their home.

The industrious nature of the people of Anambra is always visible in the highly commercial nature of the state. Anambra people are very hard working and they have succeeded in growing very big businesses in the state. The big business owners venture into manufacturing and produce several goods that are transported within and outside the country.

Majority of the people in Anambra are into trading which is quite visible in the sheer number of markets that occupy every available space in the city.

1. Onitsha Main Market

Onitsha Market is the biggest market in Nigeria. The sheer volume of transaction that goes on in the market is unlike any other markets in Nigeria. Many graduates in Anambra upon graduating from the university immediately open a shop in the market; hence it has created jobs for thousands of graduates in the states.

The market is populated by traders who imports various goods from all parts of the world. Some importers imports as many as six 40tonnes container. The big traders among them can import up to 20 to 40 consignments of 40 tonnes container.

The unique attraction of the market is the wide varieties of goods that are sold in the market; from motor cycle spare parts, building materials, clothes, shoes, foodstuff and machine parts, the city is surrounded by every goods one can imagine. No wonder traders come as far as Coutonou, Dakar, Accra, Abidjan, Duala, Niamey and Lome to buy their goods.

Due to the high volume of transaction going on in the market, a local vigilante force was created to work in tandem with the Nigerian Police Force, to protect the traders of their highly prized possessions.

The traders in Onitsha market have one of the strongest market association in Nigeria called the Onitsha Markets Traders Association (OMATA). OMATA has a responsibility to represent the views of every trader in the market when matters of government policies, public interest and development are raised.

2. Nkwo Nnewi Market

Nnewi is a popular city in Anambra, Nigeria. It is home to clusters of large industries notably Innoson Motor Company, Uru Industries Ltd, Ibeto, Cento group, Cosharis Group, John White industries, Louis Carter group and a host of other smaller industries.

Most of the manufacturers in Nnewi started from importing and selling parts in small shops before going into direct manufacturing. This has led to the creation of the biggest spare part markets in Nigeria; the Nkwo Nnewi Market. This is one of the most popular markets in Anambra.

In this market, various forms of spare parts can be found here. The market has since 1970 controlled the automotive spare parts market in Nigeria accounting for as large as 80% of the auto parts markets.

3. Ogidi Building Material Markets

The building materials market is located in Ogidi in Idemili North Local Government, Onitsha in Anambra State. It is a very popular market for buying any type of building materials.

One thing you will always observe in the market is the number of trailers bringing in building materials to the market. Some of the building materials sold are tiles, kitchen fittings, Plaster of Paris (POP), finished and unfinished wood, aluminium panels, plastics, carpets, steel rods, paints etc.

The market sells both goods produced in the different parts of the country and the ones imported from other countries. The market is located directly off the Onitsha-Enugu express way; hence it provides an easy means of entry for both trailers bringing in goods as well as buyers.

4. International Electronics Market Onitsha

This market is located at the old Onitsha Enugu road in Onitsha, Anambra State. The electronics market is a very popular market where various electronics can be bought. It contains several locked-up shops arranged in identical rows.

The goods are usually brought in containers of different size from the port in Lagos state. Most of the traders in the market are into wholesale of electronics. Warehouses of different sizes have been built in the market for receiving the consignment offloaded from the containers. Some of the major electronics manufacturers that are well stocked here are Sony, Samsung, Nokia, Panasonic, Binatone, LG, Themocool and others.

The market has suffered some serious disaster lately. This year flood submerged several shops in the market and destroyed goods worth millions of Naira. The flood was caused by the blocking of the drainage along Onitsha/Asaba express road.

In October 2015, there was a fire outbreak in some parts of the markets which led to destruction of goods worth over 50 million Naira.

Anambra’s place in the economy of Nigeria can never be written off. Its residents through dint of hard work and creativity have gone to create several big and popular markets in Anambra and the entire West Africa.
